In a recent interview with Essence Magazine, Nakita Holmes, the former owner of the Turkey Leg Hut, opened up about her life, marriage, and business struggles. She shared the story of how she met her husband, Lynn, in a beauty shop. At first, she was put off by his loud and over-the-top personality, but over time, he grew on her—eventually more than she did on him, by her own admission.
Nakita’s account of their relationship painted Lynn in a harsh light, citing abuse, infidelity, and business conflicts. Surprisingly, she also cleared up a common misconception: while many believed Lynn had served time for drug-related charges, she revealed it was actually for tax fraud.
She didn’t hold back on discussing the early challenges of the Turkey Leg Hut. Nakita explained that they were in debt to their food suppliers early on, a situation that escalated when Lynn’s disagreements with vendors led to lawsuits. She also touched on the controversial dress code changes Lynn implemented at the restaurant, including rules like:
• No excessively revealing or ripped clothing.
• No house attire (wave caps, durags, shower caps, or house shoes).
• No exposed undergarments (bras, panties, or sports bras).
• No obscene language or excessively baggy clothing.
• No swimwear of any kind.
As someone who’s been to the Turkey Leg Hut before and after the dress code, I can say the vibe did change. The first time I went, it felt more like a club atmosphere, though not uncomfortable. After the rules, you could tell things were more structured, but it wasn’t a drastic difference to me.
While Nakita’s interview was filled with finger-pointing at Lynn, word around town suggests she’s not without fault. There are claims that she’s borrowed large sums of money without repaying—allegedly even owing Lynn’s mother $60,000. Many say she’s smooth with it, and if you think someone has money, you might be more willing to lend to them.
What stood out to me is how private Lynn has been about their relationship. He’s never spoken publicly about their marriage, and that says a lot about his character. Meanwhile, Nakita seems intent on airing their dirty laundry. From what I’ve observed, Lynn is a hardworking Black man who probably won’t be easy to replace.
What do you think? Does Nakita’s side of the story hold up, or is there more to the truth?
